This approach allows our client’s to capitalize on their specific strengths while letting go of everything that hinders their progress.

The clinicians at Sonoma County Counseling are trained in multiple modalities, which can be useful, as all individuals are unique. We favor an approach which is tailored to your specific needs, background, culture, orientation, and world view.

Please feel free to reach out and contact us by email or telephone, in order to discuss your specific needs and to let us know how we can be of assistance.

Following are some of the methods and techniques we employ:
Solution Focused Brief Therapy is goal oriented and collaborative. Together we target your desired outcomes of therapy as a solution, rather than dwelling on the symptoms or issues in your life, which are causing you distress. This positive and strength based approach recognizes that people already know, on some level, what change is needed in their lives. We will discuss your present and future circumstances and develop a meaningful vision of your future. We will join you, the expert on yourself, and help you to determine what skills, resources, and abilities you already possess, that can be enhanced in order to create the change you desire for your life.
Narrative Therapy starts with the belief that the problem is the problem, not the person. This mode of therapy believes in an empowering, collaborative, and non-pathologizing way of working which recognizes that people already have the skills, natural competencies and expert knowledge within themselves to bring about change in their lives. By locating the problem apart from the person, it allows for a more objective view of what’s coming up without the resistance that comes from over identification with the problem. This process can help a person gain personal agency for addressing their problems in the future.

Narrative therapy is a very successful way of treating adolescents, families, and couples because it sets the stage for more positive ways of interacting that emphasize acceptance, non-judgmental, and deeply meaningful communication.

CBT is based on a cognitive model, believing that the way individuals perceive a situation is more closely connected to their reaction than the situation itself. CBT is used at Sonoma County Counseling in conjunction with other therapies, in order to help our clients change their unhelpful thinking and behaviors, which ultimately leads to lasting improvement in mood and functioning. We help you to stop reacting and being triggered by life’s challenges, while being kinder to yourself.
The use of Expressive Arts capitalizes on the mind-body connection and creative processes to foster deep personal growth and healing. Expressive Arts offers an integrative and holistic approach, which is particularly useful in helping one to heal from the pain of past traumatic experiences. These process oriented, right hemispheric approaches can be powerful tools, on their own, or when used in conjunction with traditional talk therapy. Some of the available modalities are:
• Art
• Movement
• Poetry
• Journaling/Writing
• Sand Tray
• Drama
Client Centered Therapy offers the assumption that each person has the capacity and desire for personal growth and change. We all possess within ourselves untapped resources for self-understanding and for altering our self-concepts, basic attitudes, and negative self-directed behaviors. Our therapists utilize empathy and unconditional positive regard to help facilitate change, while remaining present, compassionate, non-judgmental, and authentic throughout the session. At Sonoma County Counseling we believe that it is time for you to be kind to yourself.

This approach is for clients with chronic mental health challenges. Case Management is a strength based, recovery oriented approach, geared towards helping you to lead a meaningful and satisfying life, while retaining your personal identity, regardless of whether or not you have ongoing symptoms of mental illness. Through a collaborative therapeutic relationship and a keen sense of advocacy, we will assist you in developing skills and access resources needed to increase your capacity to be successful and satisfied in the living, working, learning and social environments of your choice.

Our Recovery-oriented practice emphasizes hope, social inclusion, community participation, self-management, coping skills, pragmatism, interpersonal skills, and personal goal setting.
